Timothy Ryan was appointed chief executive officer and publisher of The Baltimore Sun in March 2007.[1][2] He is the fourth publisher for The Baltimore Sun since Chicago-based Tribune Co. purchased the newspaper in 2000.
Baltimore Sun
Under Ryan’s leadership The Baltimore Sun has been forced to make a series of dramatic layoffs, including veteran editors and managers, columnists, photographers and designers. In April 2009, 61 people or 27% of its newsroom were laid off. The Sun’s total newsroom staff is down to 148 from 420 when the Chicago-based company first acquired The Sun, an alarming 64.8% reduction.[3][4]
The Baltimore Sun has been operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since December 2008 when parent company Tribune Co. filed for bankruptcy protection. Sam Zell took on $13 billion in debt when he bought Tribune Co. in 2007.
Early Career
Prior to joining The Baltimore Sun in 2007, Ryan worked for The Chicago Tribune as vice president of circulation and consumer marketing. Before joining The Chicago Tribune Ryan worked in a similar role at The Baltimore Sun and held that position from July 2000 to February 2005. Ryan has more than 25 years experience in the newspaper business, including a period of time working with The Philadelphia Inquirer.[5]
Education
Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.[6]
